Classic Northern Stellenbosch old style Red. All my wines are address specific, from a unique terroir or Appellation as the French call it. This is a classic 1970’s era style red from the Northern part of Stellenbosch. It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Cinsault. The aim of this wine is to produce a wine that defines the Northern side of Stellenbosch, and hopefully in future becomes part of the identity style of this special part of the Stellenbosch wine region.

We started our winery in 2008 with “blank” labels signifying a clean page of new beginnings to communicate address as the identity of a wine rather than a grape varietal. In 2016 we moved to using art pieces on our labels done by well-known artists of South Africa. Each artwork represented a unique expression of each wine.
All our wines are address specific, from a unique Terrior or Appellation as the French call it. This is our first duel region wine. The first vintage, 2022, is Palomino from Piekenierskloof and Chenin Blanc is from Paarl. Palomino grows well in extreme climates, usually hot and dry. Piekenierskloof is perfect for Palomino as it is both hot and dry yet with cool nights as it is situated on a plateau at around 700m altitude.
It is the grape mostly used in Jerez(Spain) for the production of Sherry. It’s a “bland” & neutral varietal, yet it’s known for its distinctive salty taste which pairs exceptionally well with food. The Chenin component is selected annually from one of the existing Chenin’s we produce, to bring some balance and beauty to complement the saltiness of the Palomino. The name Soutsteen translates to “Salt-Rock” . The “Sout”(Salt) part refers to the Palomino and “Steen” is a synonym for Chenin Blanc in South Africa.

Single Vineyard Old Bush-vine Chenin Blanc. All our wines are address specific, from a unique Terrior or Appellation as the French call it. This wine has a serious connection with my “roots” in wine, hence the name. The block is situated in the Aprilskloof on the Northern part of the Paardeberg in the Swartland. I started my winemaking in this area in 2002 and made many Chenin’s from this soil type. The Swartland is a warm & arid terroir and produces wines with concentration and depth. This block is planted on a decomposed granite soil which produces elegant perfumy wines to balance the concentration and depth, typical of the Swartland terroir.

Northern Paarl lighter style Red. All my wines are address specific, from a unique terroir or Appellation as the French call it. This wine is made from several vineyards from the northern valley of Paarl. The idea was to create a lighter style red. Grenache and Cinsault are both lighter style red varietals, well suited to the warmer climate of the northern Paarl Valley. Carignan & Syrah bring structure and texture respectively to this blend. This valley has the benefit of a cooling breeze during the hot summer months due to its proximity to the cold Atlantic ocean. This enhances the perfumy elegance of the wine.

Label art – This is an amazing artwork done by new up and coming artist, Hennie van Loggerenberg. We took a photo from a vantage point at our Wellington Hometown OVC vineyard looking south east at the northern Paarl valley where all the vineyards of PAARL ROCKS is situated.
The artwork shows the northern part of Paarl mountain connecting through the northern Paarl valley to the start of the Paardeberg mountain. Table Mountain is visible in the far distance. The artist illustrates how the sub-terrain is connected to the surface with roots of the vines.

Single Vineyard Old Bush-vine Chenin Blanc. All my wines are address specific, from a unique terroir or Appellation as the French call it. KOFFIEKLIP OVC is an Old Vine Chenin Blanc(OVC) from a 1984 Swartland bush-vine vineyard. The dry arid climate of the Swartland produces our warmest and richest OVC showcasing ripe balanced fruit with intense colour. Three components are usually harvested at different ripeness levels in order to create a harmonious balance between rich & ripe Chenin flavours and freshness & acidity of the earlier picking.

Single Vineyard Old Bush-vine Chenin Blanc. All my wines are address specific, from a unique terroir or Appellation as the French call it. Wellington is one of the historic wine producing regions in the Western Cape. The climate is warm with moderate rainfall. In terms of white wines the region is certainly best suited for Chenin Blanc and perhaps even Grenache Blanc and a few other warmer climate varietals. In 2015, Wellington became our hometown. And after searching for the right vineyard we finally found a 1979 Old Bush-vine Chenin in 2018. 2019 Marked the first vintage of our W.O. Wellington Old Vine Chenin. We have had issues with other W.O.’s in the past in terms of trade names etc. and hence decided to re-name the wine to HOMETOWN OVC.

HOMETOWN OVC is the midway of three of our OVC’s in terms of fresh minerality and power. The soil is a duplex soil and has both quartz and “Koffieklip” (Ferricrete) rocks and pebbles throughout the top soil horizon. Koffieklip” which translates to “Coffee-stone” as the small dark-red pebbles almost look like coffee beans. Quartz brings the freshness & minerality and the iron rich “Koffiekilp” brings the power balance to the wine. Components are harvested at different ripeness levels in order to create a harmonious balance between rich & ripe Chenin flavours and freshness & acidity of the earlier picking.

Single Vineyard Old Bush-vine Chenin Blanc. All my wines are address specific, from a unique terroir or Appellation as the French call it. Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s most important white grape and is versatile & well adapted to our warm as well as cooler climates. We are currently producing three Old Vine Chenin’s (OVC). This is our OVC from the northern Paarl wine region and the lightest of our three OVC’s. Components are harvested at different ripeness levels in order to create a harmonious balance between rich & ripe Chenin flavours and freshness & acidity of the earlier picking. The aim of this wine is to produce a white wine that defines the northern Paarl ward, and hopefully, in time, becomes the identity style of the northern Paarl region.

Typical Voor-Paardeberg style Red. All my wines are address specific, from a unique terroir or Appellation as the French call it. The Voor-Paardeberg is historically a very old wine region, but in terms of the name its fairly new as a ward on its own. On paper it’s a sub-ward of Paarl, but in reality it’s more on the Swartland side than Paarl… It’s a bit frustrating as a winemaker but that is unfortunately how it is. If BLACK, our Swartland Red, is stylistically comparable to the Northern Rhone, then KASTEEL-NEEF is certainly more Southern Rhone. The main component is Grenache assisted with some Carignan and Syrah for structure.

All my wines are address specific, from a unique terroir or Appellation as the French call it. WhiteBlack was my first white wine, the first vintage was 2009. Over the last +/- 20 years, pioneering young winemakers, have been making wines with a common style and identity in the greater Swartland region. Over the years, two styles of white emerged, 1. Chenin or Chenin based blends and 2. Non-Chenin based blends containing Mediterranean varietals such as Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Clarette Blanche and so on… WhiteBlack is the latter, usually a blend of Roussanne, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc. Although WhiteBlack is technically from the Voor-Paardeberg region it is in fact a Swartland style white… and traditionally Voor-Paardeberg was a sub-region of the Swartland but for bizarre reasons is now a part of Paarl… The name, White”Black” however refers to a white wine from the Swartland, as Swart translated is Black.
